What do you feed yourself? || Eating healthy.

Food is essential. Food is what we eat to survive. You’ll agree with me that in as much as food nourishes our body, there are unhealthy ones – ‘junk food’ which are bad for our health.

Today we will be talking about food for our hearts and minds. Yes, what we feed our hearts and minds is just as important as what we feed our body. There are foods that can build you up spiritually and there are those foods that can cause  harm to your spiritual health!

I have been studying the book of Daniel of late and the first chapter of this book actually talks about how Daniel made a decision not to defile himself.

3 And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;
4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
5 And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
6 Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
7 Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.
8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Daniel refused to defile himself.
You may probably be wondering, isn’t this just food? No big deal. No! To Daniel it was more than just food. He understood his body was God’s temple and he wasn’t going to let anything pollute it.

1 Cor 6:19; Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.

Daniel knew not to allow just anything into his body.
Just like Daniel, do we consider what we take into our bodies?
Do what we read, listen to (on radio) and watch on television matter?
How about the music we listen to?
Do we consider the people we surround ourselves with, the jokes we listen to even the gossips?
What do we feed our inner man on a daily basis?
We are what we eat. I have learned that what comes out of us is only a product of what goes inside of us. If you take in trash, you will give out trash.

Notice in verse 5 that these foods were offered to them? In the world today, you don’t need to go extra mile to get these junk foods, they are being offered to us daily (at our workplace, in our neighborhood, the internet) but we can always choose to say, No thanks, I’ll pass. Yes, some of these foods may be appealing to us, the aroma – irresistible  but they can cause harm to our spiritual health.

When we feed our hearts and minds with junk foods we will end up contaminating the people around us with our toxic farts!

We need to be selective in what we eat.

Daniel was in the palace but he refused to defile himself with the kings food. Like Daniel, we can choose not to defile ourselves with the junk food the world offers us daily.

Have you been eating healthy of late or do you need a change of diet?
