Intentional spiritual growth|Be intentional

2018 done and dusted!

It was a full year. Lots of lessons learned.  It was a year my faith in God was greatly tested.

Here we are in 2019. What are your plans for the year? I’m sure you already have plans for the year.

Any spiritual growth goals?

Wait, you never thought to include that in your plans for the year? Yes, it as much important as any other goal you may have included in your vision board for the year.

Just as every parent expects his/her child to grow, God expects us to grow too.

Towards the end of last year, God began to speak to me about intentional spiritual growth. Yes. Spiritual growth don’t just happen. We must be intentional about it. It doesn’t just happen because you have been a Christian for 5 years or 10 years or even for 15 years. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Heb 5:12

In order to grow spiritually, you have to first

Desire to grow spiritually

Decide to grow spiritually

and then make deliberate efforts to achieve that.

How do you go about it?

Spend time with God daily : Take out time to talk to God and also listen to Him on a daily basis. When we begin to spend time with God we begin to think like Him and act like Him. Jesus was intentional about spending time with God.

Spend MORE time with God : We need to spend MORE time with God than with anything else.

God shouldn’t fit into our ‘busy’ lives. Our ‘busy’ lives should fit into God.

Invest in your spirit daily / feed your spirit with good food : Recently I wrote on a topic : Eating healthy   In order to grow spiritually, we need to feed our spirit man with good food. Make deliberate efforts to listen to music, read books that will edify you!

Journaling. Recently I read a few benefits of journaling  and I have decided to start journaling. I recommend you do so too. You can do so daily or weekly. It records your growth in your Christian walk.

Find an accountability partner. Find someone or a group of friends with whom you can grow with.  Just as the Bible says  As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another (Prov27:17). You can pray and ask God for the right partner or group.

so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord [displaying admirable character, moral courage, and personal integrity], to [fully] please Him in all things, bearing fruit in every good work and steadily growing in the knowledge of God [with deeper faith, clearer insight and fervent love for His precepts]; Col 1:10

I pray you begin to live intentionally

Resting in God.

pexels-photo-747964-1709707605.jpeg

Anxious. Frustrated. Drained.

You’ve been trying to figure out how things would work out but the more you try, the more frustrated you get.

Oh no, you have a deadline to meet, nothing seems to be working and time is no longer on your side – you are fussing.

“I’m probably not doing enough. I need to do more. ”

Most times all we need to do is REST.

Luke 10: 41-42

41-42 The Master said, “Martha, dear Martha, you’re fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it—it’s the main course, and won’t be taken from her.”

So many times we  want to have everything figured out. We want to try to make it happen. We feel God is not doing enough so we need to make a MOVE.

The thing is this: it is not in our place to figure out how things would work out. It is not our job to try to make things happen. All He wants us to do is to BE STILL & trust that He is able.

When we feel the need to do much and begin to try to make things work we are indirectly saying “God I don’t trust you. I don’t think you can do this, so I think I need to help you. ”

The rest of God is not a rest from work – it is a rest from striving outside of Him.

Can you imagine trying to push a truck yourself? You will end up worn out and frustrated. Now imagine sitting in the truck while someone else drives it. How relaxing  right? That’s what happens when we rest in God! When we rest in God, we are no more trying to push the truck ourselves, we are simply sitting in the truck with God and trusting Him to drive.

In rest, there’s no worry, frustration or anxiety. In rest, your peace is assured.

Matthew 11:28-29

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

A GOOD thing or a GOD thing?

pexels-photo-132037-1150849309.jpeg

Hey fam. This post has been a long time coming! It has been sitting in my draft box for over a month now. When this topic was dropped in my heart to write on, I’d scribbled some words but it ended there. For some reasons I never got to pick it up again until now.

A couple of months ago, I was involved in something I felt was good – well it actually was or so I’d thought. It was something I had always desired so when it came I thought  to myself – this is it. I jumped at it without even thinking or praying about it. With time I realized that despite the fact  it was a good thing, it wasn’t what God wanted for me. The more I clung to it in a bid to convince myself and God – that it was a God thing, the more God gave me every reason to let go of it.

This brings me to the gist for today : a good thing or a God thing?

Not every good thing is a God thing.

The fact that something seems good doesn’t mean that is what God wants for you.

In acts 16, Paul and his companions had decided to go preach the word at a certain place but the Spirit of God did not allow them.

6 Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. 7 When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. 8 So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas.  9 During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”10 After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Was it a good thing to go preach the word at that particular place? Definitely yes! But was it what God wanted for them?  No.

Despite the fact that it was a good thing for Paul and his companions to go preach the gospel in Asia and Bithynia, it wasn’t what God wanted for them.  God had a different plan for them.10 After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Now here comes the importance of always seeking God in all we do.

That offer at your workplace or that job offer you got may be good but is it what God wants for you?

Your relationship may seem so good, but what if it is not God’s will for you?

As a believer, you may want to involve yourself in so many things out of love for God, which is good. But what if God is calling you at that moment to focus on a particular thing?

The question to always ask is: Is this a good thing or a GOD thing?

_20181022_0248471258531723.jpg

If it is a not a GOD thing, it is a distraction! Yes, while that business deal, scholarship, job offer – you name it may be a good thing if it is not what God wants it might get in the way of that which he has set aside for you.

We have to learn to discern. If we are not careful, we can actually allow the good things to distract us from God’s best.

I’ve also learned that the enemy can bring counterfeits your way to distract you from God’s original.

If you happen to be at a point right now where you are considering saying yes to that offer or whatsoever it may be – take a moment, breath deeply and ask God – what are you saying concerning this?. The best yes is yes to what God wants.

Blessings 💕💕
